Production of hemp clothing

The climate in Slovenia is suitable for the production of sixteen certified kinds of hemp seeds, which are on the EU varieties catalog. Unfortunately these do not include the seven species, that are indigenous to our region. That is because they contain a little more THC molecules, as permitted by the law.

Situation in Europe?

More and more European farmers are choosing to manufacture industrial hemp. After the harvest they dry it, shed the seeds and store it in bales. Next they transport the bales to the spinning mills, where the fibers are first separated from the stems. After a number of carding procedures they are turned to web from the card, from which they create roving parallel oriented fibers. If we want to create fabrics with mixed fiber assembly, we must carry out the mixing separately before forming the web from the card.

Hemp mixes well with cotton, bamboo, silk and other organic natural fibers. From the roving, shaped from web from the card, we wind it out on the spinning frame, to make it stronger and so that we get yarn, which we can additionally rotate into thread. The lenght of the fibers and their fineness depends on what kind of yarn will be produced and, consequently, what kind of fabric will be made.

What now?

After the spinning mill comes the weaving mill, where yarn cones are led through weaving machinery mechanisms, then we choose the binding and the final appearance of the fabric, we wish to achieve, and we weave it. Yarn cones are also used to manufacture knitted fabrics on the knitting machine. Material made this way is put on cops with yarn and transported to a dye shop. Once we have prepared the material, what follows is the designing of collections, constructing patterns, tailoring and sewing.
